Tappy Flex vs Comfort: Which Plan Is Right for You?
Tappy has two plans — Flex and Comfort. Both give you every feature the app offers: NFC tap to start, full tariff transparency, idle fee alerts, station map, QR code backup, and notifications. The only difference is how you pay for Tappy's service on top of the charge point operator's fee.
This article explains both plans clearly, shows you the exact break-even calculation, and walks through four real-world scenarios so you can pick the right one without guessing.
The two plans at a glance
Flex
+ small per-session and per-kWh fees
- ✓€0.31 start fee per session
- ✓+€0.024 per kWh drawn
- ✓All Tappy features included
- ✓No monthly commitment
Comfort
zero per-session or per-kWh fees
- ✓€0 start fee — no per-session charge
- ✓€0 per kWh surcharge
- ✓All Tappy features included
- ✓Predictable flat monthly cost
One important thing to understand: these fees are Tappy's platform fee only, not the charge point operator's tariff. The operator's start fee, €/kWh rate, and idle fees are always shown separately and always on top of whichever Tappy plan you're on. That's true for both plans.
The break-even formula
The decision point is simple. On Flex, your monthly Tappy cost is:
When that number hits €3.23, you'd save money on Comfort. Below €3.23, Flex is cheaper.
Solving for the break-even in sessions (assuming 20 kWh per session as a typical AC top-up):
(N × €0.31) + (N × €0.48) = €3.23
N × €0.79 = €3.23
N ≈ 4.1 sessions
At roughly 4 sessions per month of 20 kWh each, you break even. Above that, Comfort is cheaper. Below that, Flex is cheaper.
The kWh you charge per session also matters. If you typically charge more per session (e.g., 40 kWh at a fast charger), Comfort becomes worth it at even fewer sessions. If you do quick top-ups of 8–10 kWh, Flex stays cheaper at a higher session count.
Four real-world scenarios
| Profile | Sessions/mo | kWh/session | Flex Tappy cost | Comfort cost | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Occasional topper-upper | 2 | 15 kWh | €0.62 + €0.72 = €1.34 | €3.23 | Flex (saves €1.89/mo) |
| Regular commuter | 5 | 20 kWh | €1.55 + €2.40 = €3.95 | €3.23 | Comfort (saves €0.72/mo) |
| Daily public charger user | 10 | 18 kWh | €3.10 + €4.32 = €7.42 | €3.23 | Comfort (saves €4.19/mo) |
| Infrequent longer sessions | 3 | 40 kWh | €0.93 + €2.88 = €3.81 | €3.23 | Comfort (saves €0.58/mo) |
Both Flex and Comfort include Tappy's platform fee only. The charge point operator's tariff (their start fee, their €/kWh rate, their idle fee) is always separate and is shown to you in full before every session — on both plans.
What about the physical charging card?
Tappy lets you use your phone's NFC to start sessions — no physical card required. But if you want a backup card (for chargers where the NFC reader is broken, or as a glovebox fallback), Tappy offers a physical RFID card for a one-time fee of €9.99. It's entirely optional and not required to use either plan.
Waitlist members get the physical card for free at launch — regardless of which plan they choose.
Can you switch plans?
Yes. You can change between Flex and Comfort any time. If your charging habits change season to season — more charging in winter for heated journeys, less in summer — you can adjust accordingly. There's no lock-in on Flex (it's month-to-month by definition), and Comfort can be cancelled at the end of any billing period.
Which plan should you start with?
If you genuinely don't know how often you'll use public charging yet, start with Flex. It's free, and you can upgrade to Comfort once you have a few months of data and know whether your usage crosses the break-even threshold.
If you already know you charge publicly 4 or more times per month, Comfort is almost certainly the better financial choice — and the zero-per-session-fee structure means you don't have to think about Tappy's cost every time you plug in.
